If you ever find yourself in the tiny country town of Toodyay and a coffee and cake craving hits (they are very sporadic), pop over to Wendouree Tea Rooms. The quaint cafe has been around since the 1930s and is the oldest cafe in the Avon Valley. Located on Toodyay’s main strip Wendouree’s features an extensive lunch menu, and fresh cake’s daily.
E & I stopped in for a sugar boost whilst road tripping recently. When I think tearoom I think of little old ladies and burnt coffee, but Wendouree’s was anything but that. Antique furniture and beautiful wallpaper give the tearoom a homely feel and homemade candles are available for purchase in the window. Sitting outside in the shade watching the world go by (not much happened whilst we were there, maybe two cars drove past) was very relaxing and exactly what we needed. The Soy Iced Coffee ($5) went down very well – smooth and sweet with that soy creaminess. I opted for no cream or ice cream but it wasn’t even needed! The Crunchie Cheesecake ($6) was light and creamy with large chunks of Crunchie chocolate scattered throughout – gluttonous! E once again went with an old faithful – scones ($6). Served warm with blueberry jam and cream she was in heaven.
Not sure when we’ll next be in tiny Toodyay, but when we are we’ll be back to the Wendouree Tea Rooms for a spot of tea.
Are you a sweet person?
